This collection contains materials related to the activities of Church Women United of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and surrounding areas. It includes newspaper clippings related to the group’s four annual meetings and other projects; scrapbooks of events, including photographs, programs, letters, and newspaper clippings; meeting minutes; histories; a book; fliers; reports; correspondence; attendance records; planning guides for World Day of Prayer; and CDs. This collection is organized into 4 series: (I) Organizational Histories, (II) Meeting Materials, (III) Scrapbooks and Scrapbook Materials, and (IV) Events.

Abstract

This series contains three folders of scrapbook materials, dating from 1948 to 1970; and six scrapbooks, dating from 1983 to 2015. The scrapbook materials were removed from the original binders and placed into folders for preservation purposes. The scrapbooks and scrapbook materials contain details about the activities of Church Women United including letters to Church Women United; newspaper clippings; programs; pamphlets and photographs from the annual meeting to elect officers; World Day of Prayer; May Fellowship Day; and World Community Day.

The series also includes newspaper clippings related to: planning for the major events, speakers, and overseas relief events; “News of Interest to United Church Women” entitled columns related to films being shown and speakers; the first session of the United (Interdenominational) Mission Study Class; a “classics-for-bad-comic-books” exchange program; the death of the Bishop of the Methodist Church – Matthew W. Clair Jr.; the silver anniversary of Church Women United in Missouri; a National Church Council organizational chart; and a history of the World Day of Prayer.

The series also includes a letter from Paul C. Jones, Missouri Congressman, regarding a proposed military training program; a Christian declaration of loyalty pamphlet, and a Christian Women Building Lasting Peace pamphlet. The series is arranged chronologically by the earliest year of each folder.
