Biographical / Historical
Produced since 1867 by the Sanborn Map Company of Pelham, New York, these large scale maps were originally prepared for use by fire insurance companies and underwriters. Agents used the maps to determine how much, if any fire insurance, would be sold to an individual client based on the degree of risk associated with an individual structure. The maps show the size, shape and construction of residential and commercial buildings, and indicate the presence of fire walls, sprinklers, windows and doors, and indicate roofing and construction material. Additionally, they provide street names and widths, house and block numbers, property boundaries, and building use. Water mains, fire hydrants and fire alarm boxes are also indicated. The company is named for its founder, D. A. Sanborn.
