Scope and Contents

The vast majority of the collection consists of records from the various committees established to organize the centennial celebration of the University’s first academic year. Meeting minutes and correspondence related to planning events for the celebration make up the bulk of these records. Other records are from individuals and institutions relating to the centennial celebration. Collection is arranged alphabetically, save for the “Notes on the Collection”.

Biographical / Historical

The Southeast Missouri Normal School, currently Southeast Missouri State University, was established by an act of the Missouri General Assembly in the spring of 1873. It held its first day of class on December 3, 1873.

The centennial year was celebrated during the 1973-1974 academic year. Planning for the event began in the spring semester of 1971, as an executive committee was established. Branching from this central committee were others charged with planning particular aspects of the centennial year. Various “firsts” were celebrated and exceptional faculty and staff of the university were honored.
