Biographical / Historical

The University was founded as a normal school for the training of teachers in 1873, so the tradition of training educators runs deep. The organization of departments into colleges began with the 1976-1977 academic year. Formerly organized as the Division of Education and Psychology and Physical Education, the College of Education (COE) was established formally on July 1, 1976, with only the Departments of Education and Psychology. Like most of the colleges at the University, the College of Education has experienced multiple name changes and has had various departments under its umbrella throughout its history. The COE’s title was changed to the College of Education and Behavioral Science in March 1983. In the fall of 1988, the name reverted back to College of Education, which is retained today. The College holds accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The college manages an Academic Advising Center, an Instructional Resources and Technology Center and the Southeast Regional Professional Development Center. The COE has been a Reading Recovery site since 1991 and sponsors the Lift for Life Academy which opened in 2000.
