Organizational Sketch
The Third District Normal School for Southeast Missouri was established by a bill of the Missouri Legislature on Mar 22, 1873, and Cape Girardeau later that year decided upon as the location for the school. Under the influence of President W. S. Dearmont (1899-1921) who believed, that "normal schools should contribute more to the people," Third District grew into Southeast Missouri State Teachers College. In 1929, the Missouri Legislature officially changed the institution's name, calling it a "college for all the people. The school would keep this name until 1945, when by legislative act the word "Teachers" was removed from the title. Support for this name change came from the staff and students of the various teachers colleges in Missouri, who felt that the scope of the education provided at these state institutions had "extended beyond preparing men and women for the teaching profession. In 1972, Governor Warren Hearnes authorized changing the school's name from "college" to Southeast Missouri State University.
