Scope and Contents
The collection contains correspondence between the chair of the history department and the dean of the college, faculty evaluations, grant applications and press releases pertaining to the history department personnel. The material found in this collection is arranged alphabetically by the faculty member, with the exception of two folders reserved for adjunct faculty and faculty promotions.

Organizational Sketch
The University established the Department of History and Geography in 1877 and offered courses in Modern Europe, Geography, and Medieval history under the instruction of Mrs. F.A. Cheney. As the university grew, the department expanded its course offerings and was renamed the Department of History in 1902. By the 1980s, the Department of History continued to grow, establishing the Center for Regional History to document and preserve the region’s history and the Historic Preservation program.
