Organizational Sketch

The Department of University Police was created in 1965, when a maintenance worker was assigned as the first campus security officer. By 1970, the University had hired enough officers to provide 24 hour protection of the campus. Until 1985, the officers were deputized by the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Dept. In April of that year, the Cape Girardeau Police Department gave police commissions to all the officers of the Department of Public Safety. In August of 1994, officers were given state police commissions while maintaining their city commissions.

Under the umbrella of the Department of Public Safety are the University Police, Parking Services and Transit Services. At one time, the University Police were headquartered in Dearmont Hall and Parking Services was located at 1401 North Sprigg Street. Currently, both are housed at 1401 North Sprigg Street.

Transit Services operates a shuttle service to provide transportation throughout campus. The service is funded by the Missouri Department of Transportation and the University. Various routes have been added and expanded over the years. A route to the River Campus was added in 2007.
