Biographical / Historical
The United Daughters of the Confederacy was originally created in 1894 as the National Association of the Daughters of the Confederacy by Caroline Meriwether Goodlett and Anna Davenport Raines and changed to its current name in 1895.1 The UDC states among its goals: preserving a “truthful history of the War Between the States;” assisting the descendants of Confederate veterans with securing proper education; honoring the memory of the Confederate dead; and remembering the sacrifices of southern women during war and Reconstruction. The Missouri Division of the UDC was created in 1898 in Fayette, Missouri. The Missouri Chapter began with four chapters and has since expanded to thirteen chapters divided into three districts. It is unknown which chapter compiled this particular scrapbook.
