Cape Girardeau Railroad Payroll Ledger
Scope and Contents
Records payroll for years 1908-1909. No mention is made of which business this payroll book is a record of, but payroll is divided into numbered sections, shops, agents, engineers, watchmen, conductors, bridge gang, South Cape Store, pumper, linemen, fencing gang, brakemen, firemen, etc., so it probably can be assumed that it is for a local railroad company (perhaps Louis Houck’s). There are also very frequent references to just “Hospital,” (but sometimes listed as Cape hospital or Perryville hospital), but usually the reference is just for small change, such as ninety cents, or forty-five cents.
