Facilities Management, originally referred to as Buildings and Grounds, was renamed the Physical Plant in 1973 during Dr. Robert E. Leestamper’s era as president of the university. In 1991-1992, the name became Facilities Management.

Duties of Facilities Management consist of maintenance responsibilities for all of the facilities and grounds, and operation of the coal-fired power plant in general, but also encompass a multitude of smaller tasks. Included among those duties is summer maintenance and the redecorating of buildings and dormitories, replacing roofs on buildings, mowing, landscaping, repairs of all sorts, providing electricians and custodians for events, keeping things in working order in the dormitories, providing accessibility during snow and ice, and setting up for events and cleaning up after (including the Show-Me Center). Facilities Management also is responsible for making sure buildings are open, electricity is on, and the heating and cooling systems are in working order. There are also some limited responsibilities associated with new construction.
