Biographical / Historical
In 1906, the Oratorical Association of the Missouri State Normal School—Third District (also called the Inter-Society Oratorical Association) was organized. The preamble of its constitution stated that they were an association for the “mutual improvement in elocution, composition, and debate; and for enlarging our scope of general intelligence.” The Inter-Society Oratorical Association was composed of twenty members, five individuals chosen by the president from each of the four literary societies: the Benton, Sorosis, Webster, and Clio. Men and women both participated together in the events of this organization. They had inter-society debates, inter-school debates, oratorical contests, and declamatory contests with medals, trophies, music, and entertainment.
