Biographical / Historical

Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of History began offering a bachelor of science degree in historic preservation in 1980, one of less than ten universities nationwide offering an undergraduate degree in the field accredited by the National Council for Preservation Education. The program caters to students pursuing careers in preservation of the built environment, historic site administration, archives, or museum management. The curriculum combines classroom learning with hands-on practice and field experience in history, research methods, architectural history, preservation, historic site administration, museum studies, and archival studies. Students complete internships with museums, sites, and historical agencies around the nation.

Students can gain additional experience through the Historic Preservation Association. The student organization hosts workshops, speakers, and demonstrations relevant to the various fields of historic preservation. Every spring semester, the association hosts a banquet which brings students, alumni, and both current and former faculty together. The program also has the first program-specific alumni association of Southeast Missouri State University, which occasionally hosts events for students and alumni.
