Scope and Contents
This collection consists of materials regarding Dr. Kala Stroup’s career, both as the president of Southeast Missouri University and Missouri Commissioner of Higher Education. The materials are arranged chronologically within each series and includes reports, meeting minutes, university documentation, news articles and releases, media, and other related materials. This collection documents Dr. Stroup’s impact both as president of Southeast and Commissioner of Higher Education. These items include documentation of Dr. Stroup’s inauguration as president, her involvement with activities both within and outside of the university, news releases and reports highlighting her role as president, and partnering with international universities. The materials from Dr. Stroup’s time as Commissioner of Higher Education highlight her involvement and impact with universities all over the state. This collection includes ten series. The series include Biographical Materials, Presidential Inauguration Materials, Internal University Management, External University Relations, International, Linda Goodwin Materials, Reports, News Articles and Releases, Post Presidency Materials, and Commissioner of Higher Education.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Kala Stroup attended the University of Kansas and earned her Bachelors in Speech and Drama in 1959. In 1964 she received her M.A. in psychology and in 1974 her Doctorate in Speech Communication, also from the University of Kansas. Dr. Stroup was president of Murray State University from 1983 to 1990. In 1990 she became the first female president of Southeast Missouri State University and served until 1995. She left her position at Southeast Missouri State due to becoming the Missouri Commissioner of Education, in which she served as for seven years. In addition to the various positions she held, Dr. Kala Stroup also was the President of the National Nonprofit Leadership Alliance from 2002 to 2010. In 2010 she worked as a lecturer in the University of Kansas Honors Program until her retirement in 2018. Dr. Kala Stroup was married to Joe B. Stroup in 1960. Their marriage lasted for 53 years until he passed away in 2013. She has an adult son and daughter as well as four grandchildren.
