Biographical / Historical
The Lincoln School, previously at 731 Merriwether St., Cape Girardeau, MO, was built in 1890 for teaching African American children in Cape Girardeau. The classes were K-12 from 1890 until 1953. The school was renamed the John S. Cobb school in 1925, in honor of John S. Cobb, former enslaved man and Cape Girardeau educator. John Cobb is visible as the man in the back without a hat in the very back row. The school was affected by fire and closed in 1953.
