Biographical / Historical
The Serena Building was built between 1905 and 1907 in a design that resembles the Collegiate Gothic Style. Originally it was called the Manual Training Hall and housed the School of Manual Training. Its basement held the heating and power plant of the campus and was in use until a larger power plant was built behind it. It was later renamed the Industrial Arts Building and housed the Industrial Technology Department until the completion of Seabaugh Hall. The west and east wings were built in 1962 and 1983 respectively, and were designed in a modern style to intentionally contrast with the main building. In 1975, it was renamed after Dr. Joseph A. Serena, the eight president of the university. Along with classrooms and offices for the university, it houses the Southeast Missouri Public Radio Studio, which broadcasts the KRCU radio station.
