Biographical / Historical

Houck Field House was completed on March 15, 1927 to house the Physical Education Department. The field house contained locker rooms, indoor basketball and gymnastics stadium, as well as offices. The original Field House burnt down on February 17, 1948, but was subsequently rebuilt and expanded in 1951. The new building served as the main locker room, basketball stadium, and home of the Southeast Missouri State University Athletics Department. Houck Field House and Houck Stadium are named for Louis Houck, an important and longtime member of the Board of Regents and local railroad entrepreneur.

Houck Stadium, built in 1930, is one of the oldest stadiums in Missouri. It’s been renovated and updated numerous times and currently has seating for 10,000 spectators. It is built of native limestone quarried from the site. It is the home venue for Southeast Missouri State University football and soccer, and was for the Cape Central High School football team until 2011.
