Scope and Contents

Materials cover a wide variety of topics, including Southeast Missouri regional history, the history of the Cape Girardeau area, including its people, businesses, groups and organizations, tourism, the Cape River Heritage Museum, the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Cape Girardeau Bicentennial Celebration Commission. Types of material also vary widely, including newspapers and clippings, music books and sheet music, pictures, and postcards. The content of the collection is divided into series by subject. Materials within the series are arranged alphabetically.

Some of the original newspapers from Series XI are in fragile condition; however, they are microfilmed copies available for viewing in Special Collections and Archives.

Biographical / Historical

Patty Mulkey was born in New Madrid County, Missouri, on her family’s farm: LaPlante Farms. Mulkey studied Education with a minor in History at Southeast Missouri State University, St. Louis University, and the University of Missouri. She began her teaching career near New Madrid County, and transferred to the Jackson, Missouri, R-2 School District in 1965. Mulkey taught grades 1-9 and used her personal collection, which included historical materials, music boxes, photographs, books, dishes, and dolls to facilitate learning in her classroom. In 1982, Mulkey retired after thirty years of teaching and focused on her love of history by getting involved in regional volunteer work, including curating the Cape River Heritage Museum, giving tours of points of interests in and around Cape Girardeau, and working with other preservation associations.
