Alpha Delta Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta Minute Ledgers
Scope and Contents
Contains original notes pertaining to the establishment of the “professional English and Journalistic society,” Sigma Tau Delta (Alpha Delta chapter) at Southeast Missouri State Teachers College, as well as minutes and financial reports. Both volumes contain the constitution and bylaws. The opening comments in Volume 1 state the personal (and often humorous) comments of the charter members, their life accomplishments, dreams, and realities. The intent was to personalize these individuals for those who would chance to read their comments long after they are gone.
Volume 2 also contains minutes and financial reports. There are also several group photos of the club members, which are labeled 1958, 1962, and 1963. Individuals in the photographs are unidentified. Also included is a program from the 1970 Sigma Tau Delta National Convention at DeKalb University at DeKalb, Illinois.

Biographical / Historical
Sigma Tau Delta is the international, professional English honor society, founded in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University. Its purpose is to honor students for high achievement in English, promote interest in English and literature in the surrounding communities, foster discipline in all areas of English study, encourage good character and fellowship among its members, encourage high standards of academic excellence, and to help further literacy in society. The Alpha Delta chapter of this society at Southeast Missouri State Teachers College was formed on April 4 1934, to “promote the mastery of written expression, encourage worthwhile reading, and foster a spirit of fellowship among men and women specializing in English.” Charter members included Bernard Schmidt, Lea Abernathy, Henry Mueller, Doris Flinn, Mary E. Parker, Martha C. Shea, Mr. H. O. Grauel, Aileen Lorberg, Mrs. Ruth Kelso Renfrew, and Joseph A. Rogers. This English honor society is still active on the Southeast Missouri State University campus.
