Special Appropriations for Missouri State Normal School—Third District
Scope and Contents
Records of special appropriations from the Missouri State Treasurer for the Missouri State Normal School—Third District. The school then made payments to the various funds, by individual persons and businesses, that held accounts with the school, including accounts paid, warrant numbers, dates, and who received payment. Many businesses, local and otherwise, as well as individuals, are represented here. The ledger does not exactly indicate what the charges are for. Funds represented include the Incidental Fund, Kindergarten Fund, Maintenance, Furniture, and Furnishings, Chemistry and Agriculture Fund, Building Fund, etc.

Biographical / Historical
Due to concern during the early years of the Normal School over the lack of boarding accommodations for students, three local businessmen formed the Normal Dormitory Association in 1904. Composed of Louis Houck, L. J. Albert, and M. E. Leming, its purpose was to oversee the building of two dormitories on the south side of Normal Avenue. By September 1904, work had started on Albert Hall, a men’s dorm. Albert Hall was temporarily the home of women who boarded at the school until the completion of Leming Hall. The Normal Dormitory Company leased the dorms for $500 per year until January 1913, when they were finally purchased by the Normal School. Purchase of these buildings marked the end of a spurt of construction during the W. S. Dearmont administration.
